28.02.2005 | One-way traffic in Bosporus Strait.
In March 2005 Turkey starts the construction of the rail tunnel under the Bosporus strait, which is to link the European and Asian parts of Istanbul. When the construction is started, the Bosporus entrance is to be constricted to 240 meters (at present it is 400 meters' wide). This width will not allow carrying out the simultaneous two-way traffic in Bosporus until the construction is completed.
The project called Marmaray is planned to be completed in 2007-2008. The tunnel will be 14 km long.
Taisei – Kumagaigumi – Gama - Nurol consortium is carrying the tunnel construction. The Japanese Investment Cooperation Bank invests the project. The project is worth $2.5 bn.
The tunnel construction will allow to increase freight traffic between Europe and Asia by-passing Russia and deepsea routes.
